Sports-related knee problems
Knee problems that occur when engaging in sports or exercise (non-injury) may show the following symptoms:
- Severe knee swelling and pain
- Joint pain
- Pain around the knee joint
- Knee instability
Knee problems occurring after sports-related injuries are often caused by excessive force on the knee joint that results in torn ligaments, such as anterior cruciate ligament, meniscus, and articular cartilage. Other sports-related injuries are caused by tendinitis or muscles surrounding the joint, such as patellar tendon tendinitis, pes anserine tendinitis, etc.
Diseases or conditions which cause the symptoms
- Anterior cruciate ligament injury (ACL)
- Cartilage or meniscus injury
- Cartilage injury
- Collateral ligament injury
- Patellar tendon tendinitis
- Pes anserine tendinitis
When to see a doctor
- Severe knee pain and swelling
- Knee pain and inability to bear weight on the leg
- Knee pain that prevents you from straightening and bending the knee
- Bleeding into the skin where the pain occurs
